We kiln dry softwood lumber, hardwood lumber and milled slabs 24/7/365
We have been milling lumber and providing portable sawmill services for many years. Due to demand by our customers, in 2019 we installed our first dry kiln so we could offer kiln drying to our customers. The rest is history. Since then we've dried literally hundreds of tons of wood, at a rate of about 5-7 tons per month. Most of the wood we dry is native to western Washington, though we've also dried some very nice non-native hardwood slabs along the way, such as Black Walnut, Chinese Elm and Guanacaste (Parota).
We dry any lumber up to 4" thick by 19-1/2' long and slabs up to 72" wide. We will also dry softwood 6x6 posts. For more information about our drying, click the LEARN ABOUT OUR KILNS button:
More than half of the wood we dry are softwoods. Primarily Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, Hemlock and Ponderosa Pine. This lumber is generally used for building construction, interior trim wood, flooring and panelling. Generally speaking, softwoods of 1-2" thickness will take 7-10 days in the kiln.
The most common hardwoods we see at Kitsap Dry Kiln are Big Leaf Maple and Red Alder simply because they are in high demand and are abundantly grown locally. We have also seen a fair bit of Madrone, Elm, White Oak, and Black Walnut cut from urban trees in the area. It is always best to air-dry hardwoods before kiln drying to minimize stresses of drying often seen in hardwood, but generally speaking 1-2" hardwoods will dry in 14-21 days in the kiln.
